Odal - Smashed Up Reality / This Damned Nihilism

Odal - legend of lo-fi, psychotic, outsider, junk etc. noise from Netherlands. This album should have been originally released more than 20 years ago via Juntaro Yamanouchi (Gerogerigegege) label Vis a Vis, but that never happened so finally in 2009, after original masters were returned, these sounds found their place in Impulsy Stetoskopu label. This album is a double CDr with playing time of almost 2 hours. Odal was never a project that I would be thrilled with or that would excite me so I'm saying this right away - this album is not for my ears. That's deconstruction of music and sound into general lo-fi jumble. Samples, beating of metal junk and some garbage-like objects, I guess, interrupting lines of noise, voice recorded through microphone with too much gain, interfering with noise, loops, feedbacks etc. That's what approximately happening for two hours in this release. Truth is, I like the warmth and dirt of that soft sound and there are places that it even seems that the whole picture is shaping into some clear form and the sound has a direction that logically leads you from one soundspace to another. There are places where noise, purposely or not, takes dismal and negative shades and you listen to them with pleasure and don't want them to end. Though these moments are more an exception than a rule for this album. For bigger part music is tormenting and long indulgence of unclear sound structures, floating without any idea, grabbing one direction or another, while finally leaving everything as is and searching for another theme. The second part, This Damned Nihilism, seems slightly more consistent and darker than Smashed Up Reality. Regardless of chaotic fooling around that is still found in the second part, the mood is stronger and more suggestive. One more thing that bothers me is the package itself. Though packaging and artwork of Impulsy Stetoskopu usually fascinates with tediously realized DIY aesthetics, I think it's slightly overdone in this release. Discs are packed in a cake box and the information about the release is placed on the inner side of the lid. It looks pretty ugly. Though if I'd be looking from philosophical point of view, I could say that it's exactly the sound and appearance that would reflect true nihilistic spit in the face of the listener. Too much philosophy? I don't know. But this release is absolutely not for me. I think those who know Odal, might realize what they'll be getting in this release and let this review be just snorting of an ignorant, ill-educated person.
