Durán Vázquez - Laissez Faire, Laissez Passer

I was rather pleasantly surprised by this acquaintance with Spanish ambient/experimental artist Duran Vazquez. Though if I'd be judgint by the cover of this release, I'd say that it wasn't promising anything good. But after spinning the disc for a several times and getting more into it, I could say that this is one of those cases when rather poorly looking release does not certainly consists of poor sounds. Well, yes, this album deals with themes like war, politics, dangers of nuclear war (e.g. in one of the tracks a sample from infamous ad "Daisy Girl" is used. One of the best tracks in the album), but all this joking around with parental advisory, digital explosions etc. Well, that didn't suit my tastes so I'm leaving it. About the sound - it's rather decent album. A mix of drone, dark ambient, noise, spiced with field recordings and samples. Truth is, the album does not hold up to a rather strong start. With the first tracks it hits good, but later on it gets harder and harder to hold attention to the sound. The album starts with "The Industry" and it's the strongest track in the album, a sound in places is somewhat similar to Shift, newer works of Clew of Theseus or Cloama. Noisey, droney attack of sound that prepossesses towards the whole album. The second track is the one in which the aforementioned material from "Daisy Girl" is used. Uncomfortable track. Droney fundament covered with a sample of girl voice and propaganda of presidential election. Suggestive I'd say. The fourth track - "The Speed Tunnel" is a nice mix of recordings from the street and synthetic murmuring. As with the rest of the album, there are several noisier places and quite decent decisions in sound almost in every track, but it doesn't hold attention and the album goes downwards. There are also several rather irritating moments in this album, such as quite uncomfortably digital sound or strange interferences that perhaps should've strengthen the mood, but didn't play the trick and so on, but overall I'd be giving a positive mark for this album. A rather nice mixture. If an artist would've had time, energy and desire to polish his creations more, I think the result would be far stronger. But it is as it is.
