Vrilnoise - Stream Of Conscience

reviewed by Manuel (R.O.N.F. Records)
This is the third proper solo and physical release from the Spanish one man unit Vrilnoise active since 2007, this record is coming out just about 1 month later since a collaboration with Fear Konstruktor was released in the Spanish label R.O.N.F. Records in June'10, but I am avoiding any comparison between them because the collaborative character of that one makes them very different works in intention as well as in results.
"Stream Of Conscience" offers 9 tracks with a total and massive duration of 63 minutes. The first look of the record packaged in my hands was amazing because of the impressive artwork of Seldon Hunt and it gave me the impression of being about uncovering a new angle on Vrilnoise's music that I haven't been exposed before on the earlier albums to... My experience with this project's sounds in the past had two different approaches, one after the confrontation on live gigs and with his recordings, the first of them is a massive, chaotic and energetic attack of chaotic pulses with frenzy and even sometimes schizophrenic, totally improvised and quickly shifting and changing from a sound to another while my second view of Vrilnoise solo albums and recordings was that in studio it gets more focused and less frenzy, better-thought tracks but still with a strong brush stroke of chaos... and I wasn't wrong! this album is a different path for Vrilnoise's sound where the project seems to be reaching higher aims in musical creation, despite the fact of being 9 different songs included here, them all share a common spirit, deeper and more reflexive than my previous exposures even brushing the line of mysthical and almost magical feelings.
The sound is obviously slowly constructed using various layers which complement themselves with the predominance of synth sounds spiced with abstract noises, the noise on here is never harsh but I think it was created with a personal care for a high detailed textures. I easily might tag it as Ambient-Noise but this is way much complex than only that, as this record reveals Vrilnoise's most personal and original perspective up to date offering a very dense map of mind-moving soundscapes which offer you the freedom of making different readings on it and that's what I liked most myself, than after repeated spins I noticed myself experiencing that it could be heard in different ways. I believe that the fact of being well-informed by the artist himself that this album was more reflexive and quiet than the previous ones helped me to get it from a new and different perspective and not falling in the mistake of expecting crazy harshness or extreme abstractness.
This album got pressed in a first edition of 100 copies in professionally factory duplicated CDrs packaged in jewel case with glossy printing work... awesome layout for a CDr which really deserved it because of the Seldon Hunt artwork. Totally recommended!
