Caligula031/Halalnihil - "Split" CD
Turgid Animal is proud to present this split release from two of the most interesting modern Power Electronics acts from Italy and Hungary respectively. Marco Deplano, whose Wertham project has been a major act in the PE scene for quite some time now, with his latest project Caligula031 supplies one long, droning assault full of filth and decay. This uncomfortable listen focuses on the underworld theme of human trafficking akin to his other releases on important labels such as Filth & Violence, Nil By Mouth Recordings and Freak Animal sub-label Institute Of Paraphilia Studies. Halalnihil, the solo project of one Inhos, a relative new comer to the genre but already with plenty of excellent releases under his belt released mainly via his own imprint; The Level of Vulnerability. Here he provides 5 tracks of ear splitting and hate filled Power Electronics with impressive and commanding vocal delivery. Certainly a project which will no doubt be included among the ranks of the most dedicated in years to come. Nordens Dødsmyter - "S/T" One-Sided C-60
The first tape from the very personal new project of Sindre Foss Skancke (Utarm). "Nordic Deathmyths", as the name translates, centers around how deathrites have changed over the years since the fierce Pagan rituals of the Viking ages in his native Norway to the waning Christian rites which still loom large over much of Europe in the present day. It seems death has all but become hidden; gone from the glorious bonfires or spectacular public executions of old and moved towards being tucked way in the sterile, quiet rooms of hospital basements. Death has become an estranged relation to life itself in the Western world. The footprint of this 30 minute epic is a field recording of an actual funeral; the ambience of the church which later unfolds into mockery of the priest, who clearly does not even care about the person he is about to bury nor the family and friends that have gathered to pay their respects. Anger that even your own wishes for burial rites cannot be followed, because of restricting laws, being denied your own wishes because the dead do not protest. A hard but rewarding listen for those of us all too familiar with death and those who are seeking a return to the more honest old ways. File under: Folk inspired Power Electronics.
Regler - "#3: Free Jazz/Noise Core" 2x CD
The second album from this Stockholm based odd-ball band, Regler. Spewed forth from the damaged brains of Anders "Drajan" Bryngelsson (Brainbombs et al.) & Mattin (Billy Bao, as well as numerous solo works) and under the simple brief of playing as hard as possible for a full hour... twice. Once as a Free Jazz band and once as a Noisecore band. Both discs feature Henrik Andersson (The Answerson bass and French experimentalist Yoann Durant (Suel et al.) on sax on the "Free Jazz" disc. Perhaps this could be seen as somewhat of an endurance test or perhaps instead something to settle into and worship. Comes in double digipak packaging with reversible covers dictating no hierarchy between the two discs. Highly recommended.

Robert Ridley-Shackelton - "Purple Power" C-60
Robert Ridley-Shackelton has slowly but surely proving his longevity in the underground over the last few years. Following his own path with little to no regard for anyone else, his music has taken in a myriad of style ranging from harsh noise to lo-fi tape fumblings to deranged synth pop and everything in between. After randomly receiving a parcel from Mr. Shackleton last year containing a couple of his releases and a zine, I was immediately intrigued and remained in contact. "Purple Power" is nigh on 60 minutes of unique and lo-fi sound abstraction full of hiss, loops, casio and off kilter damaged sound as well as the occassional singing of a song. The sounds of content chaos and the sounds of madness reminding of latter day Filthy Turd. Artwork by William Watts.

Xazzaz/Space Victim/Inseminoid - "Live At Morden Tower" CD-r
Live recordings from 2013 at the infamous Morden Tower venue in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Xazzaz, otherwise known as Molotov label boss Mike Simpson, delivers a set of slow paced ritualistic noise. The tones accompanied by the candle light tower made for a truly special performance from someone who doesn't get to play enough. Space Victim is the duo of Lucy Johnson (whose performance at this years Tusk Festival under the guise of Smut was one of the highlights of the festival) and Mike Vest of Bong, Haikai No Ku and many others. Dualing guitars take off into space and never return. Inseminoid is the long standing duo of Matching Head label boss Lee Stokoe (Culver, Skullflower) and George Proctor (Mutant Ape, Sump). Nightmare inspired walls of harsh drone crumbling under the weight of girl pop fantasy. All in all; a well recorded and dynamic disc documenting the more underground edge of the Northern England none music underground. Simple covers, simple folk, simple needs.
